What is emotional intelligence?

It is “an array of non-cognitive capabilities, competencies and skills that influence one’s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures.” (Reuven Bar-On).

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to use your emotions effectively – to understand how your emotions effect the way you think and how they enable you to communicate with, and influence others. Emotionally intelligent people create effective working relationships, solve problems and increase their capacity to perform.

Key EQ skill sets include (Bar-On EQi Factors):

1. Intrapersonal skills
  • Emotional self-awareness
  • Assertiveness
  • Independence
  • Self-regard
  • Self-actualisation

2. Interpersonal skills
  • Empathy
  • Social responsibility
  • Interpersonal relationships

3. Adaptability skills
  • Problem solving
  • Reality testing
  • Flexibility

4. Stress management skills
  • Stress tolerance
  • Impulse control

5. General mood
  • Happiness
  • Optimism

So, what's all the fuss about EQ?

Unlike IQ which is relatively static in adulthood and declines later in life, EQ can be improved and developed. It provides a great anchor point from which to design and build employee, management and leadership development programs within an organisation.

Multi-Health Systems (MHS) have tested 42,000 people from 36 countries using the Bar-On EQi. Their studies have found that EQ can account for between 15-45% of work success.
